The first step between a font design and the cast type is punchcutting. Here a soot impression of the original design is transferred to a metal plate and engraved to form a mold. Later the type will be made from this mold.

Metal TYPE? why not

Nell’era del digitale abbiamo acquisito la consapevolezza del fatto che è possibile fare molto, bene e rapidamente. Questo da un punto di vista generico, ma anche da uno professionale, parlando del “mestiere” di grafico. Il digitale ci da la possibilità di andare oltre, sperimentare, innovare; ma a dirla tutta quando arriva il momento della stampa, in molti casi, la delusione è cocente. Nel particolare mi soffermo sull’aspetto tipografico.
La digitalizzazione del processo creativo del font, ha dato vitalità alla nascita di nuovi caratteri, ma ne ha decretato una malattia o meglio un handicap che i tipofili sicuramente bestemmiano: la qualità. L’offset fa la sua parte per annullare ciò, ma quando si tratta di confrontare una pubblicazione standard fatta in tipografia tradizionale ed una standard passata in offset, beh la differenza è sostanziale.
